Top 10 Worst Drinks for Your Health

Green Tea for Healthy Living- Drink everytime, Green Tea

Green Tea for Good Health? - By: Empl Alexwhite

Good health, fitness and weight loss? Green tea could be the answer you are looking for. For thousands of years it has been known to promote good health in nearly every possible way. Research has found time and again that it can lower cholesterol, reduce heart disease, fight cancer, boost immunity and give you great skin!

How is this possible you might ask?

Well, research has shown that green tea burns more calories and is a powerful anti-oxidant. That it not only inhibits the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue.

More importantly green tea is known to calm the mind..

A combination of the right food, right exercise and the right mind-set can achieve wonders. Any thing that one does is with the right focus and the results speak for themselves. The Zen monks call it mindfulness.

According to various researchers, L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea plants that is responsible for the unique flavor of green tea and said to promote relaxation and modify the stimulating effects of the caffeine present in green tea..

Some Japanese researchers have even found that theanine is a caffeine antagonist, meaning that it offsets the "hyper" effect of caffeine. No wonder people say lets have a soothing cup of tea and not coffee!

Green teas have 10 times the amount of antioxidants found in fruits and veggies, by one estimate. And is a very rich source of a specific kind of antioxidant called flavonoids. Antioxidants that protect cells from free radicals and the damage that can lead to blood clot formation, atherosclerosis, and cancer, says research. Green tea extract seemed to make the cancer cells behave unusually in a study involving bladder cancer cells - they had a hard time multiplying.

Chemicals—known as alkyl amines—which are commonly present in tea (as well as wine, apples, mushrooms, and other sources), are also present in some bacteria, cancerous cells, parasites, fungi, and other disease-causing agents. Drinking tea could prime the body's immune system against these agents, by teaching disease-fighter immune cells to recognize and remember alkyl amines.

A study in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, reveals that other chemicals found in tea are able to reactivate dying skin cells and could one day possibly be applied not only to anti-aging remedies but also to wound healing and the treatment of skin conditions. In fact some anti-aging cosmetics already contain tea extracts. So given the research and evidence a few cups of green tea could keep you refreshed through the day.

The Chinese reputedly discovered tea several thousand years ago and felt that it did them a world of good. And maybe you could feel the same too.

What could be better than sip a cup of green tea, calm the mind, get everything in the day done, and still have energy for the gym or a refreshing walk? A passerby might just say ‘hey you are really glowing today!’

A Happier Life – 7 Small Steps To A Happier Life

7 Small Steps To Get Happy - By: Stephanie Barker

A happier life is what everybody craves, and who can blame them? In such rough times, with layoffs, crime and suicides on the rise we need to remember the small things that make us smile. Here are a few small steps to take everyday to make you smile, make you happier and in the long run, save the world.

7 Steps To A Happier Life: Everyday…

1- Tell a child you love them.

Does it even matter which child? Children are not told this enough. You will make them happier which in turn will feed your own soul.

2- Say thank you out loud and mean it.

Say it about anything. Better yet, make a list of everything that you are thankful for. It may end up longer than you think possible.

3- Take a walk.

Getting outside is ideal but even if you just take a lap or two around the house, the exercise will do you good. Increase your heart rate, control your breathing, get your mind clear.

4- Smile to a stranger.

This goes along with the first one. It makes them feel good and in return makes you feel good for being a part of it.

5- Compliment yourself.

Take time to recognize what you have to offer.

6- Turn on some music.

Obviously put in something you like. Music is a universal language, full of emotion and energy. It is cathartic, so make it something good.

7- Dance to it.. Just for fun!

The percentage of people newly diagnosed with depression is on the rise and the numbers of medications to “fix it” are even larger.

Don’t perpetuate the cycle, remember the little things and learn to cheer yourself up the natural way. This will make your life much happier and in turn lightens the lives around you. Little by little you could be making the whole world a better place.

By: Zachari Hunt

Depression and anxiety seem to affect almost every person around the world in some degree. For some it is a loved one that suffers from such afflictions. And for the rest of us it is something very personal and sometimes it completely changes our lives.

How does exercise help?

Research indicates that 30 minutes of moderate to high intensity exercise five days a week reduced depression in some individuals. Other evidence suggest that being physically active can increase certain mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain. Working out also releases endorphins which are proven to make you feel better.

As you exercise your muscles release tension and that can reduces anxiety. It also raise your body temperature which for some, has a calming effect.

Exciting Benefits of Exercising include: Self Confidence, Distraction From Negative Feelings And Thoughts, Increased interaction With Others, Coping Skills, New Healthy Habits, and Weight Loss.

Why choose exercise over depression and anxiety?

It is something that anyone can do no matter what shape they are in. Increasing physical activity gets you out of isolation and keeps your mind on the positive aspects of living. As the weight comes off you will become aware of how much you've allowed the depression to lead to the unhealthy habits that contributed to your obesity.

That will get you motivated to make changes before it is too late. Instead of anxiety as a major way to deal with life you can use exercise instead. It really does help when you are faithful to a workout program.

With each day of physical activity depression seems to subside. You will realize that exercising needs to become a steady and permanent part of your life. You can actively make choices to let go of the depression and anxiety and embrace a more healthy state of mind. We all know that exercise is not a magic solution to depression and anxiety but it is an alternative to feeling hopeless and helpless.

Setting Realistic Goals

This is very important so as not to become overwhelmed and just give up. Starting slowly with attainable goals is the way to be successful at overcoming depression and anxiety when you are using exercise as part of your treatment. Begin by walking where ever you can.

But you also have to make a conscious effort to keep track of what you eat by starting a food diary. Believe it or not some foods can contribute to depression and anxiety.

Workout with a personal trainer.

Every time you workout, you will feel better and better. Watch your depression and anxiety decrease and your confidence increase.

One other important thing to remember is if you are on medication for depression or anxiety, do not stop taking it without your doctor's approval. If it's a goal to be off medication talk with your provider and ask him about making exercise part of a complete treatment plan to deal with the depression and anxiety.

So is today your day? Will you give yourself the opportunity to live a life that is full of joy?

Or will you sit on your couch full of anxiety or lay in your bed depressed and miserable? Make the right healthy positive choice: start exercising. Today is your day make the most of it!

Symtoms of Depression

Depression symptoms- How you know it -
By: Mr. Parveen

What really is depression and how you can spot it? If you suspect that someone close to you may be suffering from classic depression, it is important to have an idea about the type of symptoms to look for.

Depressed people are not necessarily sad. Mostly they just feel lifeless, empty, and lost his sense of humor and joy. Even when doing your favorite activities, they may feel detached from the project, robot-like and simply passing movements.

Depression symptoms vary from person to person and fluctuate in severity over time. As well, be aware that not all the classic traits affect each patient at the same time.

All suffer depression symptoms distinct parts. Some of these symptoms can be easily ignored by both the patients themselves and other people close to them.

Depression has many symptoms. The most common symptoms of depression are:

A long periods of sadness and lack of "get up and go": These people often complain they are not in the mood, and prefer to stay at home, feeling sorry for themselves.

A, Feelings of hopelessness: Chronic pessimism, feeling sorry for one's self, and tend to blame others for your situation are common traits. They feel that they have nothing to look forward in life.

A guilt ridden, low self-esteem and powerlessness: These usually go hand in hand, when a person due to a sense of guilt about a past wrong, unworthy and feel powerless to do anything about it. Their usual interest in hobbies and enjoyable pastimes suddenly disappears.

A Fatigue: Those who suffer from depression are chronically tired because they have lost their former zest for life. This lack of enthusiasm usually promotes low appetite and poor sleep.

A low degree of concentration: Lack of interest in the world around them leads to a lack of concentration, poor memory and indecisiveness.

Aches, pains and Itchiness: A considerable amount of aches and pains, especially arthritis and back pain is usually associated with chronic depression. Sudden headache and digestive disorders are also symptoms of depression.

Altered sleep and appetite: A depressed person can eat and sleep less due to the low level of enthusiasm, as mentioned earlier. However, the opposite may also be symptomatic. When you feel depressed, people often feel like sleeping at all hours of the day. Likewise, both gains and sudden weight loss may be signs of depression as well. Some have no appetite at all and are not motivated to eat. Others, on the other hand, we feel the need to excessively to the empty feeling in your soul for food and / or alcohol.

A, suicidal thoughts: Expressions of death and suicide should be taken very seriously. Even when apparently said in jest, professional intervention should be encouraged. The depressed person will try to hide their true thoughts by subsequent denials.

A, restlessness and irritability: People who are depressed have a feeling that there is no escape for them. They are not able to see a way out of their situation, and feel hopelessly stuck. Your negative thoughts become an obsession since being blown out of proportion.

Depression can be treated

Don`t Let Depression Keep Dragging You Down
- By: David Cromby

Depression is curse on modern society and if left to take a hold of your personality and everyday thoughts will soon drag you down deeper and deeper into a living hell. However help is at hand. Omega-3 essential fatty acids can play a vital role in eradicating it.

New research has shown that a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can effectively treat and prevent depression and other mental disorders.

The research, published in February issue of the "Biological Psychiatry" journal, has actually shown that Omega-3 fatty acids and foods where as good as (and often better) than anti-depressant drugs.

A high profile article, published by the Harvard University, put Omega-3 in the mental health limelight by offering solid proof that fish oil could significantly reduce the effects of mental disorders.

Doctors studied patients whether eating fish oil or Olive oil in conjunction with regular medication stabilized the patient's moods.

After 4 months, patients taking fish oil showed a significantly longer period of remission from the disorder than those eating olive oil.

In a related study, 30 schizophrenic patients were given fish oil as their sole treatment. After 12 weeks the fish oil decreased one third of their symptoms, enough that they postponed taking antipsychotic drugs.

Deficiencies in Omega-3 and other fatty acids have also been associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD).

Epidemiological, experimental and new clinical studies have all shown a strong connection between omega-3 fatty acids and depression, or a lack thereof, and major depression.

Omega-3 Intake Declines, Depression Rates Climb.

There has been a significant drop in the intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the western world over the last 3-4 decades. The opposite can be said of Omega-6 intake.

Although essential, omega-6 oils are found in abundance in our modern world, (Corn, safflower, sunflower, cottonseed, sesame). The omega-6 oils are now outnumbering the omega-3 intake by 20:1.

The true recommended balance should be 1:1.

In direct contrast to the depletion of omega-3 fro the Western food supply, the rates of depression have dramatically increased. In addition depression is now occurring more commonly in younger persons.

Researchers such as Udo Erasmus cite the huge increase in the intake of highly refined saturated fats and a huge decrease in the consumption of essential fatty acids as the defining factor in the corresponding rise in the number of people diagnosed with mental illness.

Fish Consumption And Depression.

Doctor Joseph Hibbeln of the National Institutes of Health is a major pioneer in this area. He has shown that higher national consumption of fish equals lower rates of depression.

Fish consumption is associated with lower risk of depression and higher mental health. Researches are now observing increasing rates of depression in regions of the world that are moving away from traditional omega-3 rich diets.

This comprehensive study revealed that there was a significantly reduced chance of developing depressive symptoms if we consume fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids on a regular basis.

A further study in 2003 which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated that elderly patients suffering depression had very low levels of omega 3 in their bodies.

How to deal with Depression symtoms

Depression,10 Ways To Defeat
The Curse Of Depression - By: David Cromby

Is there a link between low intake of Omega-3 fatty acids and high increase of depression?

There has been a significant drop-off in omega-3 fatty acid intake within Western countries over the last century. The opposite can be said of omega-6 intake.

A similar increase has been detected in the increase of mental disorders and symptoms of depression. Epidemiological studies clearly suggest that adequate omega-3 fatty acids may be an important protective factor in depression as they have found low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood cells and fat storage cells of those suffering with major depression.

So the first and foremost way of defeating depression is:

1/ Eat the right types of fats, namely the fatty acids found in fish oil.

2/ Eat more Omega-3 fatty acids and less Omega-6 fatty acids.

3/After childbirth women have 6 times the normal risk of serious mental disorder, possibly due to a deficiency in Omega-3 type fats.

4/ Once you get your diet to the correct balance become pro-active, do something around the house and if you can’t find something to do just get out of the house, have a drive, jump on a bus.

5/ if the weather is too bad for that grab a box of crayons and draw your depression. (It Works)

6/ Every hour take in several deep breaths; get oxygen into your blood stream.

7/ Have a good old stretch, stretch those limbs, arms, legs, mouth twist your neck.

8/ Go for a good workout and blast the blues away, increasing your positive endorphins.

9/ Have a hot soak in the bath. Hot water defeats the stress response, which leads to depression.

10/ Take time to relax and meditate. Close your eyes and listen. How many different sounds can you hear in ten minutes?

Only you can win the fight against depression and victory will not come at the first battle. But with determination and pounding at the walls of depression rest assured they will come tumbling down.

With a healthy balanced diet and active determination V-Day will not be far off.

How you should boost your energy level

6 Great Ways
To Naturally Boost Metabolism - By: Kate Ryan

You don't have to be tired and unmotivated. There are several easy, natural ways to increase energy levels and break out of the cycle of lethargy that binds you. Keep reading to learn some of the small changes you can make to recharge your battery and reclaim your life.

1. How and when you eat can drastically affect your energy levels.

Try breaking your meals into several snack-sized portions and spread them throughout the day - eat every 2 hours or so. Protein rich foods such as nuts and eggs are great for increasing your energy. They're also excellent brain food, so by eating them you maintain and perhaps even improve memory and concentration.

2. Sugar and caffeine actually set you back.

Both help you feel better in the short term, but because the crash will inevitably come, your energy levels will most likely be even lower than before. If you're going to have a caffeinated drink or a candy bar, it's best to have it in the morning so it will burn off a little quicker. Save your afternoon for energy maintenance.

3. A multi-vitamin can go a long way towards balancing your nutritional needs and they help your immune system. Fiber supplements work to control blood sugar and keep you regular. They also help you feel full for longer after you eat, so instead of thinking about food, you'll be waist deep in that spreadsheet you need to concentrate on.

4. Sleep is one of the main factors in recharging your energy. I'll take quality over quantity any day of the week, so get to know your sleep habits. Do everything in your power to make sure you get quality sleep.

5. Did you ever notice that when you get stressed or angry, your internal "wick" burns faster? After an emotional discussion with your spouse or a hard, stressful day's work do you feel tired? Your emotions play a huge part in your level of energy. Try to maintain your emotional stability and you'll find your energy levels will even out.

6. Stretch. Set a timer and at one hour intervals throughout the day,

Stretch your muscles or get up and take a walk. This will release the toxins that build up when you're motionless and allow you to distress your body. Be sure to drink lots of water during the day to help flush those toxins out.

To increase your energy levels, start with one of the tips here and add more as you feel more comfortable. In no time you'll see that there is a way out of the inertia and into an energetic and healthy lifestyle.

How Long Does Nicotine Stay in Your System?

How Long Does Nicotine Stay in Your System - By: David B

Can nicotine be constituted as a drug?

In my opinion, Yes! And that is simply for the reason being that it is a highly addictive substance, one which causes the brain chemicals to react and change making smokers feel drawn to it with out any resistance. Nicotine has a close relation to any other addiction being that it creates good moods and bad ones when smoking or going through a small withdrawal state.

The Process of nicotine and how long it stays in your system:

When the chemicals of nicotine enter your bloodstream, the body is sent into over drive trying to compensate for the damage being done to the body. As this process is taking place the chemical reaction causes a rapid blood flow from the heart, creating a chain reaction in which blood pressure rises and the heart rate increases causing the arteries to tighten and become narrower.

It is known that carbon monoxide in association with smoking and its effect on the body causes a decrease in the oxygen level that is carried to the blood. When all effects of nicotine and this are put together, the body becomes deprived in search of more oxygen supply for both the blood itself and cells in the body.

Once nicotine has entered the body, it is transformed and turned into a substance called cotinine. The time it actually takes for cotinine to rid itself from the body varies and can be a quicker process for those with a high metabolism.

It can usually take several days or up to a week plus for it to clear your system being that you steer clear from smoking including second hand smoking.

Is there a solution?

The obvious answer here is to completely quit smoking! That is in the best interest of your own health and well being.

The best possible answer here is to drink plenty of water and or to sweat out the toxins. By doing both you can eliminate or speed up the process of traces of nicotine within your bloodstream.

The decision to quit smoking is a healthy lifestyle choice.

Smoking Withdrawal Symptoms and How to Best Avoid Them –
By: Cecilia Boudreaux

The decision to quit smoking is a healthy lifestyle choice. But it is not an easy one. When you quit smoking, you may discover the development of multiple side effect, which are difficult to get through and can lead to people taking up smoking again. So how do you avoid these side effects, or at the very least minimize them?

It is important to do your research, and know what kind of side effects you might experience. The more you know in advance, the less of a surprise they will be and the easier it will be to deal with them.

Remember that side effects are both physical, such as headaches and increased appetite, and also mental - as you force your body to change its habits, you also have to change your behavioral patterns.

There are aids you can use to help with the physical side effects.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a common avenue of approach. NRT includes patches, gum, inhalers, etc., that contain nicotine and work by gradually reducing the nicotine intake. These can help minimize the physical effect of cutting nicotine out, but also have the downside of actually containing nicotine, which can lead to a relapse in smoking.

Help groups are also available, and can be found both locally to you and online. Connecting with other people who are going through the same side effects as you can help you mentally cope with the effects of quitting smoking. This is especially true of the mental side effects, such as changes to your behavioral patterns, which you will undergo when you quit smoking.

It is important to research the difficulties that you will experience when you quit smoking. But remember that these can be overcome, and your new, smoke-free lifestyle will hold immense health benefits for the future.

High blood pressure, or hypertension

High blood pressure (hypertension)

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition in which the force of blood against artery walls is too strong. Over time, high blood pressure can damage the arteries, heart, and kidneys and can lead to heart disease and stroke.

High blood pressure can be treated effectively with lifestyle changes and medications that can reduce the risk of complications.

Blood pressure readings consist of an upper number and a lower number (such as 120 over 90 or 120/90). The upper number is systolic blood pressure; the lower number is diastolic blood pressure. Blood pressure readings are measured in units called millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Normal blood pressure is 119 mm Hg systolic over 79 mm Hg diastolic or below.

A person has high blood pressure (hypertension) when either or both of the following are present:

    * The top number (systolic) is 140 mm Hg or higher.
    * The bottom number (diastolic) is 90 mm Hg or higher.

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease

Coronary artery disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on the inside of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. Plaque is made up of excess cholesterol, calcium, and other substances that float in blood and, over time, build up on the inside walls of the coronary arteries and other arteries.

This process of plaque buildup is called hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. The plaque deposits decrease the space through which blood can flow. Poor blood flow can "starve" the heart muscle and lead to chest pain. A heart attack results when blood flow is completely blocked, usually by a blood clot forming over a plaque that has broken open (ruptured).

Coronary artery disease is treated with lifestyle changes, such as increasing exercise, eating a heart-healthy diet, and stopping smoking. Coronary artery disease also is treated with medications to help reduce high cholesterol, control high blood pressure, and manage other risk factors.

A stroke is a sudden disruption in blood flow to the brain

Stroke

A stroke is a sudden disruption in blood flow to the brain caused by a blockage or bleeding of a blood vessel. Areas of the brain that are affected by the blockage or bleeding can become damaged within minutes.

The effects of a stroke may be mild or severe and temporary or permanent, depending on which brain cells are damaged, how much of the brain is involved, and how quickly the blood supply is restored to the area.

Symptoms of a stroke are sudden and may include:

-Sudden numbness, paralysis, or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, especially on only   one side of your body.
    - New problems with walking or balance.
    - Sudden vision changes.
    - Drooling or slurred speech.
    - New problems speaking or understanding simple statements, or feeling confused.
    - A sudden, severe headache that is different from past headaches.

A person with stroke symptoms needs immediate medical attention to help limit potential damage.

High fat diet causes laziness and more

High fat diet causes laziness and more

Submitted by Kathleen Blanchard RN on Aug 13th, 2009

Research published online in The FASEB Journal suggests that eating a high fat diet can quickly lead to laziness.

In case that is not enough to inspire healthier eating, the study always shows that high fat foods can impair memory in just a few days. The new study showed that after just ten days of consuming a high fat diet, rats exercised poorly, and showed signs of short term memory loss.

The findings show that what we eat has a significant impact on memory and function.

The study authors say the short-term effects of eating a typical Western diet have been poorly studied.

In the long-run, the result of eating a high fat diet is obesity, diabetes, and heart failure.

The new study shows that eating a high fat diet has a negative impact on health even when consumed short-term.

Andrew Murray, co-author of the study and currently at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom says, "We hope that the findings of our study will help people to think seriously about reducing the fat content of their daily food intake to the immediate benefit of their general health, well-being, and alertness.

" Most people can attest to feeling lazy after eating a calorie laden high fat meal. The study authors found out why we become lazy after eating high fat foods.

Switch That Sugary Drink for Water

Stop Sugary Drinks and Drink more water

Diet and Weight Loss

Submitted by Ramona Bates MD on Apr 22nd, 2009
Sugar Drinks

Being overweight has become the most common medical condition of childhood. Complications of being overweight or obese include not just the increased social problems, but the “adult” health problems of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and joint problems.

Sugary drinks have become a “staple” in the daily diet of many children who have a least one can of soda a day. These drinks are the main source of added sugar in the daily diet of children. Each 12-oz serving of soda has the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar so provide many non-nutritional calories.

If you switch one can of soda per day to water for your child, the child will have improved glucose and insulin levels. This in turn reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes in the child. It would also decrease their risk of obesity and the health issues that come with increased weight.

Replacing milk with soda at meals decreases the child’s intake of calcium which increases their risk of osteoporosis (weak bones). Weaker bones are easier to break.

It is recommended that children be given water, milk, or real fruit/vegetable juices to drink. Buy these rather than sodas. Encourage your children to drink water between meals.

Discomfort, burning sensation and acid coming up till throat?

That painful burning sensation up from your stomach?

You know you shouldn't have eaten such a big meal. But it was so good, you couldn't resist more helpings.

Many people who suffer from Heartburn, this is a  familiar reaction and all they want is a Heartburn home remedy.

Almost half of the population have Heartburn and want a Heartburn home remedy at one time or another and in one form or another. For some, it's almost daily occurrence. It is caused when stomach acids and other contents flow back, or reflux into the esophagus.

Unlike the stomach that has mucus producing lining to stop the irritation of acid and in some cases ulceration, the esophagus does not. This is why burning sensation occurs. The gate or valve between the stomach and esophagus does not close properly after each mouthful of food is swallowed allowing the acid from the stomach to go up in the esophagus.

In cases of pregnancy with the added intra-abdominal pressure, it tends to force the stomach fluids up in the esophagus, so 6 or 7 smaller meals are recommended

A Heartburn home remedy can be simply be a few simple lifestyle changes.

The simplest would be to adopt a low fat diet and include a balance of protein, starches and high fiber rich vegetables and fruit. Coffee including decaffeinated brands produces high acid production.

Teas, colas, and other caffeine drinks should be cut down or avoided. There has been no evidence that spicy foods cause indigestion with the exception of red and black pepper but if your suspect your discomfort occurs after a spicy meal you should avoid them.

Heartburn home remedy's include the use of nonprescription antacids to neutralize or suppress stomach acid. Try not to eat at least 2 hours before bedtime, and try not bending over and keep your back straight. Smoking does not help as it relaxes the muscular sphincter between the esophagus and stomach. Alcohol doesn't help so limit your intake.
